SUPERIOR VERMICULITE

PRODUCT INFO

Vermiculite was first described in 1824 for a occurrence in millbury , Massachusetts USA.

Its name is from latin vermiculare, to breed worms , for the manner in which it expands when heated.

Vermiculite is a hydrous , silicate mineral that is classified as a phyllosilicate and that expands greatly when heated. Expandsion occurs when the mineral is heated sufficiently, and the effect is routinely produced in commercial furnaces. Vermiculite is formed by weathering or hydrothermal alterion of biotite or phlogopite . large commercial vermiculte mines currently exist in Russia , south Africa , china and brazil

Completely sterile.
Has a very high surface area for moisture and nutrient absorption.
Has some ion exchange properties which help to buffer a compost-but which can interfere with nutrient solutions for hydroponics.
Can be sterilised by heat or flame.
Lower air holding capacity.
Tendency to be alkaline.
Tendency towards crushing flat due to laminar structure.
Can be difficult to sterilise after use with chemicals or with steam.

HORTICULTURE

Vermiculite has a wide range of applications for horticulture , hydroponics and propagation its rangers include

  • High Water Holding

  • Excellent Aeration

  • Sterile and Disease

  • Releases Magnesium , Potassium and other Trace Nutrients

  • Soilless Growing Media

  • Seed Germination

  • Soil Conditioner

  • Storing Bulb and Root Crops

INDUSTRIAL

  • Vermiculite is used as a packing matrial, valued for its high absorbency.

  • Used to permit slow cooling of hot pieces in glassblowing , lampwork , steelwork and glass beadmaking.

  • Used as a sterile medium for the incubation of reptile eggs.

  • Used to absorb hazardous liquids for soild disposal.

  • Used in gas fireplaces to simulate embers.

  • And for brake linings for the automotive market.

CONSTRUCTION

Vermiculite can be used as a loose fill insulation it is treated with a water repellent it is used to fill pores and cavities of masonary construction and hollow blockwork to inhance fire ratings , insulation and acoustic performance.

As a lightweight aggregate for plaster , proprirtary concrete compounds , firestop mortar and cementitions spray fireproofing. It is used in both hand and spray applied generalbuilding plasters to improve coverage , adhesion to a wide variety of substates , fire resistance and resistance to chipping , cracking and shrinkage
